VIENTIANE – The Lower Mekong Initiative is a program to bring the nations that share the Mekong River (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam) together to jointly confront issues such as education, health, environment, and infrastructure. In February 2012, the U.S. Embassy launched a program to train officials from all these countries in English language skills, so that they could more effectively communicate with each other. The Embassy's partner was the Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport, which helped organize five 2-week English seminars, taught by American English Language Fellow Rocky Peltzman and teaching assistants Ms. Vanida Luangthepxayavong and Thanousone Boualapha. Ultimately, 135 officials received training and built connections that will last them throughout their careers
