BANGKOK – From April 9-10, LEAF and the ASEAN Regional Knowledge Network on Forest and Climate Change (ARKN-FCC) held a workshop in Bangkok on “Identifying and Addressing Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation”.  Twenty-three participants, including fourteen women, from ASEAN Member States and Papua New Guinea drafted a framework for a regional decision support tool to help countries identify and address drivers of deforestation.  The tool will be further developed by LEAF and presented in a follow-up meeting later in the year.  The identification and assessment of drivers of deforestation and forest degradation is an essential step in actually reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), but the subject has so far been given insufficient attention.  This work is part of LEAF’s regional approach to supporting the development of policy incentives for greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions and strengthening regional platforms to effectively implement REDD+.
