From April 9-10, 2013 the USAID-funded Lowering Emissions in Asia's Forests (LEAF) program and the ASEAN Regional Knowledge Network on Forest and Climate Change (ARKN-FCC) held a workshop in Bangkok on “Identifying and Addressing Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation”.  Participants from seven ASEAN Member States and Papua New Guinea developed a framework for a regional decision support tool to help countries identify and address drivers of deforestation.  The tool will be further developed by LEAF and presented in a follow-up meeting later in the year.  The identification and assessment of drivers of deforestation and forest degradation is an essential step in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), but is often given insufficient attention.  LEAF’s regional approach to supporting the development of policy incentives for greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions and strengthening regional platforms aims to help address this gap and effectively implement REDD+ in Asia.
