The inaugural program for “The Development of ASEAN Youth Eco-Leaders through Volunteerism and Community Engagement” concluded successfully.  The program, funded by USAID in partnership with the ASEAN Secretariat, the Malaysia Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, aimed at strengthening youth leadership skills in environmental conservation across the ASEAN region.

A pilot group of 97 volunteers from ASEAN countries completed environmental community service activities in Malaysia.  The volunteers started sharing their experiences through media and were tasked to propose plans for the replication of similar projects in their home countries.  They were strongly encouraged to identify and make efforts to collaborate with local partners/organizations to ensure greater ownership of the project on ground and also to obtain funding support.
