The U.S. Agency for International Development’s Mekong Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change (USAID Mekong ARCC) project is working with the International Union for Conservation of Nature Lao PDR and local authorities to improve water storage and distribution for villages in Khammouane Province, Lao PDR.
Water engineers in villages in Done Keo and other target villages recently conducted a water feasibility assessment to identify potential ways to increase water supply. Constantly in line waiting for drinking water at their village’s only source, 18-year-old Nee had to spend 15 minutes filling a 10-liter bucket with water.
The waiting time is common throughout the province and gets even longer before the rainy season begins in June. “Next month we won’t have any water here at all,” Nee said. “Soon we will have to walk much further up the mountain to get all of our drinking water.”
