Mekong - U.S. Partnership
USAID’s Mekong Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change (USAID Mekong ARCC), in partnership with World Food Programme (WFP), went to six villages in central Cambodia’s Chey commune in a participatory, science-based decision-making process to analyze climate impacts on traditional livelihoods.
The process, implemented with support from communes, combined community perspective with climate science. Organizers used participatory methods, climate change projection maps, drawings and videos in Khmer to educate villagers on climate science and climate change impacts in Kampong Thom. The teams also helped villagers and commune leaders work through scenarios to help plan for a food secure and climate resilient future.
The commune leaders will incorporate the outcomes of this planning activity into their yearly commune development plans. The partnership between USAID Mekong ARCC and WFP works in parallel with the WFP Productive Asset and Livelihood Support Program that supports the government of Cambodia to increase rural communities’ assets and resilience through cash/food for work programs.
