USAID’s Mekong Adaptation and Resilience to Climate Change (USAID Mekong ARCC) project and partner International Union Conservation of Nature Thailand are supporting the Hae Ko village in northern Thailand’s Chiang Rai Province to reduce water-borne diseases and improve water security by installing a village-wide water filtration system.
Nearly 300 Lisu hill tribe people have built resilience against threats to their water supply with the new system. The system is one of the adaptation activities identified through USAID Mekong ARCC’s adaptive decision-making process, which links local knowledge with science to strengthen community resilience.
Hae Ko villagers will also receive household water meters and will be trained in improved water sanitation, conservation and management practices. Safe drinking water is a small, but vital step in mitigating the impacts of climate change for ethnic hill tribe communities in northern Thailand.
