More than 25 practitioners working on land and fire management issues came together from January 21 to 22 in Chiang Mai, Thailand for the Regional Training on Fire Management Planning for Northern Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states.
While commonly used in Southeast Asia for agriculture and land clearing, fires in the region can also have negative impacts on biodiversity and the climate. The training used integrated fire management (IFM), a community-based fire management program that has had positive results around the globe, to better equip people and agencies with the knowledge and skills to manage fires.
USAID’s Lowering Emissions in Asia’s Forests (USAID LEAF) project, the Thailand Department of National Parks, U.S. Forest Service, the Global Environment Centre (GEC) and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations’ Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific collaborated on the training, part of an overall effort to ramp up and replicate IFM processes across the region.
