Mekong - U.S. Partnership
The U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh organized an environmental speaker series from Sunday, August 14 to Thursday, August 18, 2011, featuring environmental expert Shana L. Udvardy, Director of Flood Management Policy at American Rivers, a U.S. conservation non-profit organization focused on protecting rivers and preserving clean water to sustain people, wildlife, and nature. During her visit to Cambodia, Ms. Udvardy conducted a series of workshops on flood management for university students, authorities, and community-based organizations in Phnom Penh and Kampong Chhnang Province. She also met with officials from the Cambodian National Mekong Committee to discuss the fishery and flooding situation in Cambodia. Her specific activities included:
- Lower Mekong Initiative workshop in Phnom Penh for Phare Ponelu Selpak students
- Community floods and forestry workshop around Tonle Sap Lake with local authorities and community-based organizations in Kampong Chhnang
- Lecture on flood management in Phnom Penh for students and professors of Pannasastra University of Cambodia and the Royal University of Phnom Penh
- Lecture on climate change in Phnom Penh for university students of the Youth Resource Development Program
- Workshop in Phnom Penh for the Rivers Coalition of Cambodia Networking Group on climate change and hydropower, soil and water conservation practice, disaster risk management and climate change adaptation practices, and best practices on advocating before the government and NGOs
As part of the Lower Mekong Initiative, the U.S. Department of State, through its Office of U.S. Speaker and Specialist Programs of the Bureau of International Information Programs, sponsored this environmental speaker program and other traveling speakers’ series that brings American citizen experts to elaborate on a broad range of topics.
