The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in support in partnership with the Mekong River Commission Secretariat and the four National Mekong Water Committees (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam) completed a third Regional Dam Safety Workshop in Vientiane, Laos.  These Dam Safety Workshops are designed to enhance water security within the Lower Mekong by promoting regional dam safety awareness, reducing dam related risks, improving emergency response plans, and identifying impacts of additional infrastructure along the Mekong River and its tributaries.  This third workshop looked at cascading dam systems, managing multiple dam systems, and water management and operation strategies for multiple reservoir systems.  The workshop also included practical exercises and a field visit to the Nam Ngum 2 dam and reservoir.  Previous dam safety workshops were conducted in Vietnam and Cambodia.  These dam safety workshops are funded by the U.S. Pacific Command.
